There are several different versions of how the Clan came to be. All the details of these differing versions are too complex to set forth here. However, a more detailed explanation is provided in the excellent history of the Clan Macpherson titled The Posterity of the Three Brethren by Alan G. Macpherson. This fine little book is on sale at a modest price in the Museum shop. Much of what you will see in the next series of panels will be more fully explained in this book and it is highly recommended.
While the several versions of the origins differ as to detail, they do agree that the clan was a branch of the Old Clanchattan, that it was originally located in the Lochaber district of the western Highlands and that it was known as Clann Mhuirich. Although there are many differences between them the most significant are concerned with the identity of the individual who was the common ancestor from which came the name Macpherson.
