Prince Charles Edward's Medusa-head Targe Rescued by the Macphersons

This beautiful example of Scottish artisanship was rescued by members of the Macpherson Regiment after the Battle of Culloden. It was among the many items being carried by Prince Charles Edward Stuart's baggage train .

The targe was displayed in Cluny Castle during the 19th and early 20th centuries before it was sold in 1928 for the sum of 4000 guineas. It was given to the National Museum of Scotland in 1945 by the late Mr John Murray of Clava in memory of his grandson, Captain John Dill who was killed in action in Italy in 1944.
