CLUNY'S CAGE IN VIDEO

In the early 1960s the Disney Studio made a movie of Stevenson's novel Kidnapped starring Peter Finch as Alan Breck Stewart and James MacArthur as David Balfour. The result is faithful to the novel's story line including the pair's stay at Cluny's Cage. The glorious outdoors scenes of the production were filmed on location in the Scottish Highlands and what could be more faithful than that? However, it is fully understandable why the recreation of Cluny's Cage was accomplished in a London studio rather on the slopes of Ben Alder.

The Macpherson clansmen who appear in the film all wear 'Macpherson Hunting' tartan small kilts which might be questionable from a purely historical viewpoint. Another questionable aspect is the appearance of the actor who plays the character of Cluny Macpherson -- Finlay Currie. Although, it's of interest to note that the name Currie is among those who are the adherents of Cluny Macpherson, Finlay appears to be somewhat older than the 46- years that Cluny was in 1752. In addition, he carries a bit more weight around his middle than a person who has been living 'rough' for six years. Nevertheless, the character comes across in a creditable way. The lines he speaks are, of course, those that Stevenson wrote but they don't reflect unfavourably on the historical Ewan Macpherson.

John Murray of Broughton was a person who knew Ewan well. He wrote that he "is of low Stature, very square, and a dark brown complection; of extreme good sense, and inferior to none in the north of Scotland for capacity; greatly loved by his Clan, who are by all their neighbours allowed to be sober, regular, sedate people; a man not only brave in the general acceptation of the word, but upon reflection and forethought determin'd and resolute with uncommon kindness."

The running time of the video version of the film is 95 minutes. It is distributed by Walt Disney Home Video of Burbank, California. A side-light of the film is that it was the first appearance of Peter O'Toole who has become much more celebrated than any of the others who appear in this film.
