THE YOUNG CHIEF'S FIRST RIDE

This painting is the work of the celebrated Victorian artist, John Frederick Tayler (1802-1889), who is renowned for his landscape and sporting watercolours. The painting was acquired by the Museum at the public auction of the Cluny family treasures in 1943. From an inspection of the tartans worn by the 'young chief' (Macpherson Dress) and the old retainer (Macpherson Hunting) there has been speculation that the 'young chief' might be the young Ewen of Cluny, eldest son of Duncan and Catherine born in 1804 who was to become Chief of the Clan Macpherson in 1817 after Duncan's death. However since the artist is a contemporary of Ewen it is more likely that the subject is one of Ewen's sons.

In any event, this section of the Museum is dedicated to the memory of Ewen who came to be known as 'Old Cluny' during the eighty-one years that he led the Clan. It is called the Victoriana section because Ewen's tenure spanned much of Queen Victoria's reign and the close connection that Ewen and his family had with the Royal family.
