Ewen Macpherson of Cluny (1804-1885) succeeded to the Chiefship of the Clan and to the Cluny estates on the death of his father -- 'Duncan of the Kiln' in 1817. He would have been only 13 years of age at the time. Nevertheless, he was destined to possess the Cluny estates for a period of nearly 68 years.
'Old Cluny' as he was popularly known all over the Highlands, always maintained with true dignity the fame of his ancestry and he inherited all their military ardour. Prior to his marriage he served as an officer in the Black Watch, a regiment that his eldest son, Duncan would also serve in time rising to be the commander.
