Ewen Henry Macpherson became the 22ndChief of Clan Macpherson on 3 October 1896 on the day that his oldest brother, Duncan died. The debate as to who was the rightful Chief of the Clan Chattan had not abated and Ewen Henry summoned his loyal clansmen to Cluny in the following May to tender their "allegiance and loyalty to Cluny Macpherson", as chief and head of Clan Chattan. A photograph of those who gathered there that day can be seen at Panel 32 as well as a menu of the banquet served to the attendees.
There was no Clan Macpherson Association in those days but there were two Clan Chattan Associations -- one headed by Ewen Henry and the other by the Mackintosh. Although documentation is sparse, the two associations continued to meet in Edinburgh and Glasgow periodically as well as in the Highlands until such debate was silenced by the seriousness of World War I. It wasn't until 1934 when the present-day Clan Chattan Association was founded by a group of Macphersons and Mackintoshes as well as other traditional families that belonged to the historic Clan Chattan Confederation. The first President was a Macpherson As stated in Issue No. 1, " The object of the Association is to unite our Clan once more and draw our folk together in spirit wherever they are. To save our Clan relics and to house them safely must be one of the first of our activities, and, therefore, the Committee have agreed to the setting up of the Cluny Estates Fund Sub-Committee, whose efforts are recorded elsewhere in this journal. The Association is ready to 'Consider any such schemes which may appeal to other branches of the Clan Chattan."
