THE GOVERNMENT BAN ON THE WEARING OF THE TARTAN

A reproduction of the Government poster abolishing the tartan and Highland dress. It proscribes its wear under pain of transportation outwith the British Isles. This law was in effect until 1783 when it was repealed. The fake 'distressing' of the poster does not lessen the egregious nature of its message nor the fright that the Highlanders imparted to the Sassenachs.

In separate legislation the bagpipes were included in the list of 'weapons' that were banned. However, this list did not include the sgian dhu or small utility knife that a Highlander thrusts into the top of his hose (because there are no pockets in a kilt). It is of interest that the present Government of the United Kingdom recently abolished the wearing of the sgian dhu in public
