The Charmed Sword" bears the blade mark of "ANDRIA [sic] FERARA." It was purchased at the Cluny Castle sale. Andrea Ferrara was a famous sword maker and most of the Highland broadswords are marked with his name. However, all swords bearing his mark were not actually made by him. The armourers of Solingen located in the Ruhr Valley of Germany discovered the high esteem that Signor Ferrera's products was held and, in those days before trade mark protection, marked their output with his name, not always with the correct spelling. It is well established that they did this at the request of the purchasers -- Lowland Scots who added the basket hilts enroute to the Highland.
There is a tradition that no one who carried The Charmed Sword was ever wounded in battle. It is said to have originally belonged to one of the Duke of Argyll's men during the time of the '45 rebellion. We are told that his descendants later passed it into the hands of Cluny Macpherson.
Colonel Duncan Macpherson of Cluny, 21st Chief wore it during the Indian Mutiny in 1857 while serving in the Black Watch.
