The sword has remained in use as a ceremonial object, long after its use as a fighting weapon had been superseded. It has held an honourable position in many cultures because of the basic equality inherent in two men fighting at arm's length, with a weapon that is openly worn on the person, unlike the dagger which can be easily concealed. Swords are frequently presented as a symbol of military skill or honour, and are passed on as heirlooms.
