GRAVE SITE OF THE MACPHERSONS OF BREAKACHIE

The grave site of the Macphersons of Breakachy was originally enclosed with an iron railing that has now disappeared, perhaps to the scrap iron drives that took place during WW II. The two gate posts appeared to escaped.

On a marble tablet in the monument surmounted by the Cluny coat of arms, there is the following inscription listed in Alexander Macpherson's Glimpses of Church and Social life in the Highlands, 1893:--

"Sacred to the memory of Colonel DUNCAN MACPHERSON of Bleaton, who died at Kingussie the l2th day of December 1810, aged 75 years; and his wife, MARGARET MACPHERSON, who died 6th November 1808, aged 66, and daughter of the late EWEN MACPHERSON, Esq. of Cluny, and Chief of Clan Chattan. This monument was erected by their youngest and only surviving son, Colonel ROBERT BARCLAY MACPHERSON, C.B. and K.H."

After Duncan Macpherson was evicted from Breakachy by the Duke of Gordon's factor, he and his family took up residence at Bleaton (near Blairgowrie) . After theGeneral died his remains were removed to the Highlands for interment in this grave site. He was the last lineal descendant.

The site has deteriorated over the years as can be seen from the headless cat on the marble representation of the Macpherson arms on the monument. Click to see The Headless Cat
