SIR THOMAS STEWART MACPHERSON CIE, LL.D, JP
1876 - 1949

      Sir Stewart Macpherson was born at Strone House, a croft then in the Parish of Kingussie. He was educated at Edinburgh University and Trinity College, Oxford.

      A career civil servant in India he rose to be Chief English Puisne Judge, responsible for the organisation and supervision of the judiciary in the province. Sir Stewart was knighted in the New Year Honours of 1933 when his brother Ian became a Baronet (Lord Strathcarron). His outstanding administrative capacity found further scope when he was made Vice-Chancellor of Patna University at a time of exceptional unrest among the students.

      On retirement he returned to the family home at Speyville, Newtonmore where he immersed himself in the local community. Sir Stewart was Chairman of the District Council and member of the County Council. He was also Chairman of the National Liberal Association for Inverness-shire and an Elder of Newtonmore Church.

      Married to Helen Cameron they had five sons and two daughters who all excelled. James (JAS) was a doctor on the Orkneys. Philip (GPS) was best known as the captain of Scotlandıs victorious Grand Slam rugby team in 1925. Sheila married Harold Kittermaster, headmaster of Cargilfield School, Edinburgh. Niall (NMS) was a politician who became Lord Drumalbyn. Archie (AIS) was a distinguished Edinburgh surgeon. Rhona (HCS) a graduate of Edinburgh University was awarded the OBE for her community work. The youngest, Sir Thomas (RTS), CBE, MC, TD, DL, is married to Jean Wilson and they reside in the Badenoch area.

      Sir Stewart took a great interest in the formation of the Clan Macpherson Association.
