
The dirk and scabbard shown on the right belonged to Peter Macpherson who came from Idrigal of Trotternish on the Isle of Skye. He was the grandfather of Calum Piobair. The silver-mounted scabbard and its companion on the left are fine examples of the items that were awarded as prizes to the winners of piping competitions of 19th century.
The dirk of the scabbard set on the left is missing. Although only their hilts can be seen the scabbard houses a knife and fork for 'dining out' as well as the dirk. Apparently it was once the custom in the Highlands for dinner guests to provide their own dining utensils. The scabbard set was presented to the Museum by Mrs A. W. Hiscoe of Florida and is inscribed:
