John MacDonald was another student of Calum Piobair who came to be recognized as among the most skilled of the profession. He eventually rose to become the Honorary Piper to King George V and later, King George VI. For his services, he was awarded the honour of Member of the Order of the British Empire.
John came from a family of piping virtuosos. His father had been personal piper to Macpherson of Glentruim and later to the Earl of Fife; his Uncle William was with King Edward VII while he was Prince of Wales. His brother, Duncan was also a piper of distinction.
