Birdseye Remembered in McPherson, Kansas

The community of McPherson, Kansas of around 14,000 inhabitants was established in 1872 and named in the General's honour. The city is located near the center of the state about 100 miles north of Topeka, the state capital.The equestrian statue of General McPherson shown at the right was erected there in 1917.

The city hosts a municipal pipe band that wears the Macpherson Red tartan. It aso the site of an annual Highland Games. A festival is held there in conjunction with the Games and banners bearing the General's likeness such as shown to the left are suspended from lamp post throughout the downtown section of the city. One of these banners is suspended from the rafters of the Museum.

It is interesting to note the ancestries claimed by the population according to the 2000 census were: German (32.3%), Irish (8.9%), Swedish (8.8%), United States (8.7%), English (8.2%), French (3.7%).
