THE GREAT STONE SARCOPHAGUS OF TUTANKHAMEN REVEALED

The Winged Figures of the Protective Goddesses, Isis, Nephthys, Neith, and Selk
FROM A DRAWING IN COLOUR BY D. MACPHERSON

"The above picture, by The Sphere's special artist-correspondent, shows the huge stone sarcophagus of the king resting within its nest of shrines in the sepulchral chamber of the royal tomb. In order to show the wonderful winged designs on the sarcophagus itself, part of the pall screen and the pall, together with portions of the covering shrines, have been removed in the picture. A winged figure stands at each corner, spreading its protecting wings round the whole of the four sides of the sarcophagus. The wonderfully rich yellow and black of the outer shrine imparts a strange Japanese appearance to this great erection."
