An accredited specialist in gastroenterology and general internal medicine, he was educated at Camelford Comprehensive School in Cornwall, U.K. and Emmanuel College, Cambridge (Senior Scholar and Bachelor Scholar).

Dr. Macpherson has been the recipient of numerous prizes and awards including the Emmanuel College Prize (awarded twice), the Colin MacKenzie Prize (Biochemistry), the Peake Prize (Medicine), an MRC PhD Scholarship, MRC Training Fellowship and MRC Clinician Scientist Fellowship, the Beit Fellowship and the Ciba Fellowship.
