The March of the Clan Macpherson at the first Gathering took place through the streets of Newtonmore village with the golf course as the destination. This was also the place for the Highland Games that year. Today, the Games are held on the 'Eilean' near where the River Calder joins the River Spey. The starting place for the modern marches is the farmhouse of 'Old Ralia' and proceeds along the road down the hill, across the Spey Bridge and on to the field that also serves as the shinty 'pitch' for the Newtonmore Camanachd Club. That is the scene depicted to the right with the pipe band leading the march and the crowd on the 'eilean' below awaiting the arrival of the Macpherson men.
