Note the intersecting blue lines on the map section shown at the right. A coordinate character has been assigned to each resulting square on the map as shown -- a numeral for east-west coordinates or a letter for north-south coordinates. The coordinates for the designated 'lochan' in the Monaghliath mountains to the northwest of Newtonmore is thus '5T'. It could just as readily been 'T5' but the convention we adopted is 'number-letter'.
The purpose of these coordinates to facilitate the map location of 'places of interest' such as townships (farms), cairns, monuments, and other significant geographical features that are listed on the cards that make up the Places of Interest Index file -- a card for each individual place.
Although it is difficult to see on the wide-area view of the whole map, the boundary of Badenoch is designated in yellow. As time becomes available we plan to highlight other features as well.
