POLE AX FROM CLUNY CASTLE
A pole ax was a popular in foot combat. The word "poll" actually meant "head", and the weapon was used to strike the opponent in the head. The solid hammer head at the back could cause a man in armor to suffer a concussion! The sharp edge was designed to penetrate armor. The long shaft enabled foot soldiers to attack horsemen. It's not known whether this weapon was used by Macphersons in battle or served to encourage speculation on the part of visitors from the South.
