During the period leading up to the outbreak of World War II, there was a concerted effort by a number of prominent clansmen to establish a Clan Macpherson Association, and this received widespread publicity in the national press. Indeed a "Big inaugural meeting" was arranged to be held at Kingussie on Saturday 16th September 1939 and a local committee had been formed. However, the meeting was postponed due to the outbreak of the war two weeks earlier.
At this time both Sandy Macpherson and Stewart MacPherson were already household names, and the following amusing snippet appeared in the Radio Times for 18th August 1939:--
"Stewart MacPherson seems to be broadcasting nearly as frequently as his namesake Sandy; they ought to found a Broadcasting House branch of the Clan MacPherson Society (though they would have to toss up to decide whether Sandy was to start using a capital P in his name or Stewart was to start using a small one)."
The spelling of the name Macpherson varies and is often used in the manner it was recorded by the local Registrar, Minister or previous generation. It is most frequently recorded as McPherson, Macpherson or MacPherson but there are other ways of spelling it, including the Gaelic version Mac a' Phearsain. All are correct as it is a matter of personal choice or family tradition. However, it should be noted that the house style for the Clan Macpherson Association and the Clan Museum is Macpherson with a small 'p'.
