Arms of Hon. Mr Justice A Alex Cattanach
Deceased; formerly of Ottawa, Ontario
The blue galley on a gold field is based on the Arms assigned by the Lord Lyon to the Chief of Clan Chattan. The red cross-crosslets" suggest a Macpherson connection while the "sword" signifies Mr Cattanach's service in the RCAF as well as representing "the sword of justice". The sheaf of "wheat" or "garb" commemorates his father's association with wheat growing and is taken from the Arms of the Province of Saskatchewan where he attended law school.
Cattanach is the ancient name of the Macphersons. The armiger is the first of his name to receive a grant of Arms.
Crest: A demi-cat holding a "balance scale" is suggestive of the armiger's office as Justice of HM Exchequer Court of Canada now the Federal Court of Canada.
Motto: "Touch Not". This is capable of "double entendre" since it refers both to the cat and the scales of justice.
