Arms of John C. Gillies
The Arms are based on the Cluny Arms but with the predominant colours in this case of purple and gold. These are the colours of Wilfrid Laurier University, the alma mater of John Gillies and his son. The Pelican appears in the Arms of the Lumley family and alludes to the armiger's maternal heritage. The Seax replaces the customary dagger held by the hand and alludes to the Arms of Essex County and also to the badge of the Essex Scottish Regiment in which both the armiger and his father served. The wildcat crest is depicted in the traditional Gillies version of "courrant" or running at full speed and the maple leaf collar indicates that this is a Canadian branch of the Gillies family. The motto is a Gaelic translation of "my word is my bond".
